Finding Ways to Serve Others During COVID-19 | The Dover Church
News & Publications
The youth of The Dover Church have always had hearts for service. In past years they have gotten to give back to those in need by journeying up to Maine to rebuild houses, as well as spending a handful of days throughout the year working at shelters and soup kitchens throughout the year. Unfortunately, as covid-19 has ravaged our country and made the needs of many all the more acute, the virus has also made in-person service opportunities much more difficult to organize. That is why we were so excited to send a group of our young people over to Milton during the last week of September, for a day of service in partnership with the group Clergy and Laity for Affordable Housing and Temple Salem, a church in Dorchester. The teens spent the day, masked and distanced, clearing up the outside of a previously abandoned property now owned by Temple Salem, that the church intends to turn into affordable housing units for seniors and a daycare center for developly disabled adults. They cleared away a decade of leaves, fallen trees, brush, and debris, representing Dover with incredible hard work and generosity!
Temple Salem asked for volunteers to come again to help them clean up the outside of their property that had not been touched in many years. On Sunday, October 4th we had 4 volunteers that worked alongside members of Temple Salem. Building relationships through helping hands and hard work it was a rewarding afternoon for us and Pastor Serge Lamour was very appreciative of our help.
And there is still more work to do! If you would like to learn more about the project or get involved, please don't hesitate to reach out. The Dover Church is excited to partner in this effort to help ensure the most vulnerable of our neighbors have safe and welcoming places to call home! The Dover Church is located at 17 Springdale Avenue in Dover, MA. Please visit our website, www.thedoverchurch.org, for additional information. We are an Open and Affirming congregation in the United Church of Christ.
